Why tracking every dollar matters
Most small businesses don't fail because they're unprofitable on paper. They fail because the owner didn't know where the money went until it was gone. Logging income and expenses as they happen gives you a live profit number, shows which costs are growing, and makes tax season a matter of exporting a file instead of digging through bank statements.
Set aside a share of every payment for taxes. If you're self-employed you'll usually owe self-employment tax on top of income tax, paid through quarterly estimates.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track business income and expenses?
Record every sale and every cost with the date, amount and a category. Review the totals monthly so you know your profit, and keep receipts for anything you plan to deduct. Our bookkeeping basics guide walks through a simple system.
Which expense categories should I use?
Use categories that match IRS Schedule C lines if you're a sole proprietor or single-member LLC, such as Advertising, Contract labor, Insurance, Office expense, Rent, Supplies, Travel and Utilities. That makes tax time much faster.
Where is my data stored?
Only in this browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data deletes it, so export to CSV regularly as a backup.
Can I open the export in Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Click Export CSV and open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, or import it into your accounting software.
