Calculate sales tax
How to calculate sales tax
Multiply the price by the tax rate written as a decimal, then add the result to the price.
Sales tax = price × (rate ÷ 100)
Total = price + sales tax
Example: a $250 order at 8.25% has $250 × 0.0825 = $20.63 tax, for a total of $270.63.
To find the price before tax from a total that already includes tax, divide by 1 plus the rate: $270.63 ÷ 1.0825 = $250.00. Choose Remove tax from a total above to do this automatically.
State and local rates are stacked
In most states the rate a customer pays is the state rate plus one or more local rates set by the county, city or a special district. That's why the same purchase can be taxed differently a few miles apart. The table below shows each state's base rate and the population-weighted average local rate. The average is a planning number; for an actual invoice, look up the exact rate for the delivery address on your state revenue department's website.

Do you need to charge sales tax?
Two questions decide it. First, is what you sell taxable in that state? Many states tax physical products but exempt most services, while others tax specific services such as repairs or digital products. Second, do you have nexus in that state? You have nexus where you have a physical presence, and since the Supreme Court's 2018 Wayfair decision, most states also create "economic nexus" once your sales into the state pass a threshold, commonly $100,000 a year. If you do, register with the state before you start collecting.
If you sell only through a marketplace like Amazon or Etsy, the marketplace generally collects and remits the tax for those orders. Sales on your own website or by invoice are still your responsibility.
